The Patriots May Have a Perfect Season While the Dolphins Go Winless

San Jose, Costa Rica, Nov. 13, 2007 -- A lot of the recent talk around the NFL has been about the 1972 Miami Dolphins, the only team to go unbeaten in an NFL season. Why that 35-year-old club? Because the New England Patriots are more than halfway through the regular season to joining that '72 team for The
Perfect Season.

Unfortunately, it could be a doubly painful year for Dolphins fans, because their current team is approaching an equally difficult accomplishment: The Imperfect Season.

Yes, the 2007 winless Fins are more than halfway to infamy, and you can bet whether they make it at WagerWeb.com.

"What's the guy's name from Charlie Brown who has that gray cloud following him? We're like Pigpen right now," said Miami defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday after Sunday's 13-10 loss dropped Miami to 0-9 -although Miami did lead at the half for the first time this season.

The only team to go winless in a season was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 1976 Bucs at least had sort of an excuse for being historically bad: They were an expansion team. Then-coach John McKay had a quote for the ages when talking about his club. When asked about his team's execution following a loss, McKay replied: "I'm in favor of it."

The '76 Bucs lost by an average of 20. They were shut out five times, lost one game by five points and two others by three. The '07 Dolphins already have five three-point losses but have yet to be shut out.

There have been runs at the '76 Bucs before, with the 1980 Saints going 0-14 before winning. The 2000 Chargers went 0-11. But Tampa Bay stands alone.

Yes, injuries haven't helped Miami this year, including the team losing its starting running back (Ronnie Brown) and quarterback (Trent Green) for the season and trading its best receiver (Chris Chambers).

But this franchise, once one of the NFL's model organizations, hasn't made the playoffs since the 2001 season.

Perhaps one date on the Dolphins' schedule is worth circling: Dec. 23. That day, Miami could be 0-14 and facing a 14-0 New England team. Imperfection vs. Perfection.

Tie, anyone?
