What does future hold for Lakers, Kobe?
By Jordan WaltersWagerWeb.com Contributing Writer
San Jose, Costa Rica, Nov. 22, 2007 -The Los Angeles Lakers have been a pleasant surprise in the early part of the NBA season, even hanging close to first-place Phoenix in the Pacific Division.
As usual, it's Kobe Bryant leading the way for the purple and gold, as the reigning two-time NBA scoring champion is second in the league in scoring this season while also leading the Lakers in assists and steals.
"I'm very impressed,"Lakers coach Phil Jackson said of Bryant's start. "He's [put] a lot of energy in this team. He's been vocal. It's been going good for him."
"He's the best player on the planet,"Indiana Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said.
L.A. is fourth in the NBA in scoring, averaging nearly 107 points per game, and is the league's top rebounding team. The bench has been key to the good start, especially Andrew Bynum and Jordan Farmer.
Bynum, who recently moved into the starting lineup because of an injury to Kwame Brown, is averaging 11.5 points and 10 rebounds per game. Farmer, meanwhile, has doubled his career scoring average and is at 10 points per game.
However, the Lakers still haven't gotten Bryant much help -their acquisition of Trevor Ariza from the Magic doesn't make L.A. a championship contender – and Kobe continues to make it clear, behind the scenes, that he would like to be traded. He has the league's only no-trade clause, which he reportedly has wielded in shaping potential trades that fizzled with Chicago and Detroit, among others.
"Kobe's distrust of the front office remains and he would like to be playing for a championship elsewhere,"said ESPN's Ric Bucher. Bryant himself has been silent on the issue since the season began.
Perhaps if the Lakers continue to look like a playoff team, Kobe will stay put this season, but if L.A. fades, as it did last year, the Kobe rumors will really heat up again as the Feb. 21 trade deadline nears.
