Who will Michigan, Nebraska hire?

San Jose, Costa Rica, Nov. 27, 2007 -- They are two of the highest-profile, winningest programs in college football history - and both need a head coach. So who will take the reins in Ann Arbor and Lincoln?

WagerWeb.com offers odds on the next coach at Michigan and Nebraska.

Lloyd Carr is stepping down at Michigan after a four-loss regular season, including another setback to Ohio State that sealed his fate. However, Carr is well-respected among the university's administration, so he will have a say in which way the school decides to go.

UM athletic director Bill Martin already has interviewed the Wolverines' offensive and defensive coordinator, but they aren't expected to be real candidates.

In the past, Michigan often has focused on "Michigan Men", which would seem to favor two candidates in particular: LSU coach Les Miles and Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh.

Miles played and coached under UM legend Bo Schembechler at Michigan and has made no secret of his love for the school, even meeting his wife there.

Miles has kept LSU among the country's elite since replacing Nick Saban.

Harbaugh is a former Michigan quarterback, but his big-time coaching experience has been limited to only this season at Stanford.

And the school apparently won't have a problem going outside the Michigan family, as Carr says: "Well, you remember a guy named Schembechler? He wasn't a Michigan Man. Fritz Crisler wasn't a Michigan Man.

Fielding Yost wasn't a Michigan Man. I know this: Bill wants to hire the finest coach in the country."

Then there is the situation at Nebraska, which fired Bill Callahan. This season the Huskers were 5-7 under Callahan and won't play in a bowl for the second time in his four years. Callahan's West Coast offense never fit in Lincoln, and the Nebraska defense was historically bad this year, including giving up a school-record 76 points to Kansas.

Callahan was only 27-21 in his tenure, including 1-10 against Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Texas A&M, the better teams in the Big 12.

Former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne has taken over as interim athletic director after Steve Pederson was fired earlier this year.

Osborne has said the next Nebraska coach doesn't necessarily have to have ties to the school, but must have an understanding of the program's unique culture and history.

He also said it would be "nice" if the next coach already had experience at Nebraska.

LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini, who held the same job with the Huskers in 2003, and Buffalo coach Turner Gill, a former star quarterback at Nebraska, would qualify.

However, Osborne also said Nebraska ties are not a "prerequisite" and that he will just try to find "other best candidate."

Whomever the next coach is, you can bet he will be going back to the Nebraska tradition of a bruising brand of football and cultivating the best players in the state.
