The Cleveland Indians are going nowhere this season in the standings, so they want to see what they have for the future. That may be part of the reason the club is bringing second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera back up from Triple-A and plans to play him every day.
In 34 games with Buffalo, Cabrera batted .326 with four homers, seven doubles, a triple and 13 RBIs in 141 at-bats. He was the International League Batter of the Week last week, hitting .394 (13-for-33) with three homers and six RBIs and eight runs scored in eight games.
He was sent down June 9 after struggling to a .184 average with the Indians. He struck out 40 times and had 14 RBIs. The only highlight of his season came on May 12 when he turned just the second regular season unassisted triple play in Indians history.
As the second half begins, Cabrera is one of several players the Indians have to assess to determine their needs for 2009 and beyond. Last season, Cabrera was one of the sparks to the Tribe's run to the ALCS, as he hit .283 in 45 games after being called up last August and provided stellar defense.
It's expected the current Indians starting second baseman Jamey Carroll will go back into more of a utility role. However, But Cabrera played 29 of his 34 games with Buffalo at shortstop, which is his natural position. But the Indians seem set there with Jhonny Peralta.
Cleveland optioned infielder Jorge Velandia to Buffalo in order to make room for Cabrera. In seven games with the Tribe this season, Velandia was 3-for-8 at the plate with a walk, double and a run scored.
The Tribe open the second half of the year against equally disappointing Seattle. Here are the pitching matchups for the series at Safeco Field:
Friday: LHP Aaron Laffey vs. RHP Felix Hernandez
Saturday: LHP Jeremy Sowers vs. LHP Jarrod Washburn
Sunday: LHP Cliff Lee vs. RHP Carlos Silva
