Boise State’s best offensive player not named Ian Johnson is back on the team after a lengthy suspension but won’t play in the season opener.
Junior Jeremy Childs, who was suspended for last season’s Hawaii Bowl and the spring semester for “team issues” was back on the practice field Monday for the start of fall camp. Boise State coach Chris Petersen said that Childs will be suspended for the season opener against Idaho State on Aug. 30, but barring any unforeseen problems, that should be it.
“We’re happy to have Jeremy Childs back,” Petersen said. “We think he’s learned from his past mistakes and we’re ready to move forward. He’s not going to play in the first game, but after that, we’ll charge full-steam ahead with him.”
Petersen would not elaborate on Childs' suspension, and he said at least one other player probably will be suspended for the opener. According to Childs' brother, reports the IdahoStatesman, the wide receiver was suspended from school for a year because of plagiarism, but had the suspension reduced to a semester on appeal.
Childs set a school record with 82 receptions, adding 1,045 yards and nine touchdowns and was a first-team All-WAC selection in 2007. He worked out with his teammates during voluntary summer training.
"He's such a big part of this offense," senior wide receiver Vinny Perretta said. "He's a quiet, humble warrior. He's one of the best football players I've ever been around."
Heading into fall camp, the Broncos, who finished second in the WAC to Hawaii last year, have a few positions up for grabs, most notably at quarterback and the offensive line. Led by Johnson, Boise State is set at running back and also has a deep receiving corps.
Senior Bush Hamden, freshman Kellen Moore and sophomore Mike Coughlin will try to make it a three-man race to win the QB job.
“We have a really unique team in my mind,” Petersen said. “We have as much depth at a couple positions that we’ve ever had since I’ve been at Boise State, and a couple other positions where we’re maybe as inexperienced as we’ve ever been since I’ve been there.”
