Bucs quarterback Jeff Garcia was at practice on Tuesday but again wasn’t participating for the fifth straight day due to a calf strain he suffered on July 31.
Even though he's missing valuable time on the practice field, Garcia insists he's making progress and should be back out on the field sooner rather than later.
"It's just a minor [calf] strain and I don't think it's anything to get too worried about at this point in training camp," said Garcia. "It's gotten a lot better over the last few days. It's just one of those things when it's down in your legs you can't just step right back onto the practice field and start pushing yourself, otherwise, you'll just reinjure it. Hopefully before you know it I'll be back out on the field. It's not happening as fast as I would like it to, but that's just the way these things go."
No official decision or announcement has been made, but you can bet the house that Jon Gruden won’t put his 38-year-old out there for Saturday’s game against the Dolphins, who are 2-point favorites on WagerWeb.com.
“It’s preseason,” Garcia said. “It’s not a sense of getting ready for this one, but making sure I’m ready for the opener of the season.”
Gruden said that while Garcia still isn't ready to go, he is making progress.
"He can watch and be a spectator at this point," Gruden said. "Hopefully in the next 48 hours he’ll be able to get on the practice field in some capacity.”
Luke McCown and Brian Griese have been getting the majority of snaps in practice, and McCown is expected to start the preseason opener opposite brother Josh, the Dolphins’ current No. 1 QB. Griese and Chris Simms also will play.
Tampa Bay’s top receiver, Joey Galloway, also is unlikely to play vs. the Dolphins, as he has yet to practice due to a groin injury.
